Visiting Mereworth Wines

Mereworth makes traditional method sparkling wine in a converted hop oast, from its own vines on the Greensand Ridge above Wateringbury. The winery doubles as a bar and kitchen that stays open late on Thursdays and Fridays. Book the weekend tour and keep the table it reserves for you afterwards.

About Mereworth

Brewers Hall was a working farm, and its oast was where hops from the surrounding fields were dried and pressed, with apples coming in from the neighbouring orchards. Mereworth has a long history of hop growing, and the winery says George Orwell is reported to have been among the pickers here.

William Boscawen, the founder, came back to his family’s part of Kent after time working with Martini and in Italy. The vines went in from 2016, on rocky, well-drained slopes of the Greensand Ridge overlooking Wateringbury, with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier on a mix of clones and rootstocks. In 2017 he began converting Brewers Hall Oast, under the spire of Mereworth church, into the winery.

Scott Gebbie is head winemaker. The Mereworth wines are made only from the estate’s own grapes, and canopy work, shoot selection and tucking in are done by hand. The winery also makes wine under contract for other growers, and produces an aperitif from its own honey wine and an oak-aged gin.

The wines

There are three wines, all traditional method sparkling and all from the 2022 vintage at the time of checking. White from White is all Chardonnay, crisp and mineral. White from Black is Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, richer and fruitier. Pink is the sparkling rosé. Bottles of each are the same price, and magnums of the 2020 Pink are sold only at the winery. Marourde, an aperitif of herbs and botanicals steeped in the estate’s honey wine, is the thing to take home if you want something you won’t find elsewhere. Where to buy them.

Tours and tastings at Mereworth

The point of Mereworth is that you drink the wine where it is made. The bar, kitchen and shop share the oast with the winery, and there is a terrace outside. Because the tours are mostly indoors and go through working production areas, they run in any weather, but they need closed-toe shoes with grip and are closed to children and pets for safety. Arrive five minutes early, since tours start on time. Bookings can be moved or refunded with seven days’ notice. We would book the weekend tour, which is half an hour longer than the midweek one and tastes all three wines, and then stay on for lunch at the table it reserves. Monday to Wednesday is by appointment only, which catches people out. Thursday and Friday evenings run to 11pm.
